Aidin Vaziri | Idina Menzel is best known for her powerhouse roles in Broadway musicals. She played the sultry performance artist in “Rent” and won a Tony Award for her role as the green-faced Wicked Witch of the West in “Wicked.” The 41-year-old actress, who has a recurring role on the television series “Glee,” is on the road performing songs from those shows as well as tunes from her latest album, “Live: Barefoot at the Symphony.” We spoke to Menzel, who has a 2-year-old son with husband Taye Diggs, last week while she was in New York.
Q: What’s your pedicure budget on tour?
A: I’m a mom – I’m lucky if I get to shower in the morning. Luckily, nail polish stays on my toes. I’ve been so bad on the upkeep, though. It’s a good thing the audiences are so far away. My husband always says, “But what about me?”
Q: Having played the witch in “Wicked,” do kids ever wince when they see you in public?
A: Never. If anything, they dress as me for Halloween and send me videos their dads make of them. The gift I received from that role and show is hard to explain, but it’s enormous. It has this beautiful connection with young people.
Q: You did Lady Gaga’s “Pokerface” on “Glee.” Did her fans – the Little Monsters – approve?
A: I have no idea. Not like I’m above wanting to know. I just haven’t checked in. But I do feel bad when I do it live because there are all these Juilliard-trained musicians behind me, and I feel like they should be doing Vivaldi.
