Grammy Nominations: If Stars Shouldn’t Shine

Grammys’ less-than-stellar year: Aidin Vaziri | “Is this the year of the underdog?” asked Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, the “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” bandleader and drummer for the Roots, after scanning the list of nominees up for the 55th annual Grammy Awards.More like the year of the anti-star. With Adele on maternity leave and U2 in hibernation, there were no clear front-runners on the list of nominees announced Wednesday night during a high-frills live television special co-hosted by LL Cool J and Taylor Swift from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. Frank Ocean, the rising R&B star who tentatively came out before the release of his album “Channel Orange,” walked away with six Grammy nods despite modest sales figures. He got one in each major category – record, song and album of the year, as well as best new artist. But Mumford and Sons, the Black Keys, Kanye West and Jay-Z scored just as many. As did the New York pop trio Fun, many in the same high-ranking categories as Ocean. More than ever, the Grammy nominations felt as diffuse as they were diverse.
