Phoenix, ‘Bankrupt!’

Aidin Vaziri | Four years after “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix” propelled the Versailles band from modest clubs to the top of major festival bills, Phoenix returns feeling brazen. The success of the last album gave the French foursome license to cut loose on its follow-up, “Bankrupt!” The fizzing first single, “Entertainment,” with its buoyant New Wave synthesizers and singer Thomas Mars’ insistent yelping, might sound like a throwback, but it’s hardly representative of the full set, which veers from driving prog-rock instrumentals (the title track) to sunny psychedelic workout anthems (“Chloroform”). One thing that remains is the band’s unmitigated je ne sais quoi.
