She and Him, ‘Volume 3’

Aidin Vaziri | On their first proper studio album in three years, “New Girl” star Zooey Deschanel and career indie-rocker M. Ward – the she and him in She and Him – stay true to their woozy retro sound, even on a handful of covers that includes Blondie’s “Sunday Girl.” But this time around the saccharine arrangements and swaths of ’50s-style country reverb are laced with hints of the actress-turned-songwriter’s modern-day drama. While not exactly dishing the dirt of her 2011 divorce from Death Cab for Cutie front man Ben Gibbard, Deschanel offers just enough clues in songs such as “Together” (“I don’t want to be your mother,” she sings) and “Shadow of Love” (“There’s no tomorrow for me and you”) to temper the pretty harmonies with some genuine heartbreak.
