Laura Mvula, ‘Sing to the Moon’

Aidin Vaziri | Few of the singers who draw comparisons to Nina Simone really measure up, and we’re not about to join the growing chorus burdening 25-year-old British newcomer Laura Mvula with such impossible praise. But you can see their point – the classically trained musician arrives fully formed with striking presence and voice. Both are used to great effect on Mvula’s first album, “Sing to the Moon,” which teeters from the stark gospel of “She” to the casually soulful “Can’t Live With the World.” There’s not a moment here that doesn’t captivate, particularly when she ramps up the otherworldly psychedelia in tunes such as “That’s Alright” and “Green Garden.”
