Alison Moyet, ‘The Minutes’

Aidin Vaziri | Three decades after they were recorded, Alison Moyet’s smoldering vocals can still be heard on the radio singing Yazoo’s era-defining new wave hits “Only You” and “Don’t Go.” After a foray into musical theater, a bout of depression and a purging exercise that resulted in smashing all her gold records, the proto Adele returns to her synth pop roots on her first album in six years. Moyet’s pipes are as dramatic as ever, markedly so when producer Guy Sigsworth (Björk, Madonna) takes two steps back and lets them rise above the electronic clamor on songs such as “When I Was Your Girl” and “Filigree.”
