Quinn DeVeaux, ‘Originals’

Aidin Vaziri | How to describe Quinn DeVeaux? He’s vaguely retro, deeply soulful and sings with a curious twang. He’s definitely an original – one of the Bay Area’s best-kept secrets (at least for now). After his wonderful collaboration with fellow local singer-songwriter Meklit Hadero last year, in which the pair delivered homespun covers of songs by artists such as Arcade Fire and Talking Heads, DeVeaux returns with a pair of his own releases: “Originals,” recorded with his band the Blue Beat Review, is a rollicking set that sounds as if it were recorded in Memphis’ famed Sun Studio in the 1950s. “Late Night Drive,” meanwhile, is a solo affair, showcasing his sweet vocals and intimate melodies. Both are riveting.
