First Aid Kit, ‘Stay Gold’

Aidin Vaziri | It’s easy to feel a little bit lost while listening to the second album (and major-label debut) by the Swedish duo First Aid Kit, which consists of sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg. Their grasp of classic Americana is so firm and so convincing it’s difficult to believe they weren’t raised by feral ponies along the Appalachian Trail. “Stay Gold” was recorded in Omaha, Neb., with Bright Eyes producer Mike Mogis, who – on songs such as “Cedar Land” and “My Silver Lining” – gives the sisters’ wondrous harmonies a nice layer of grit while coloring their bittersweet melodies with some sinister spaghetti Western guitars and sweeping strings provided by the Omaha Symphony Orchestra.
