Aidin Vaziri | “Making ‘The Voyager’ got me through one of the most difficult periods of my life,” Jenny Lewis says of her latest album, the follow-up to 2008’s “Acid Tongue.” Her band Rilo Kiley broke up, her estranged father died and she endured two years of severe insomnia. ‘The Voyager,” which features production by Ryan Adams and Beck, is a testament to Lewis’ resilience, spilling over with sterling melodies and wit. The video for the song “Just One of the Guys” features the singer and her friends Anne Hathaway, Kristen Stewart and Brie Larson in drag. Lewis, 38, performs at the Outside Lands festival next Sunday.
Q: Do you think all the pain and suffering you went through to make this album was worth it in the end?
A: It aged me a little bit. The whole not sleeping thing – I looked into the mirror after two years and said, who is that graying creature?
Q: Do you know what set off your insomnia?
A: Looking back, it was four or five things happening at once. I just heard that in your mid-30s you go a little crazy. It’s so brutal.
